Neural Prolotherapy

Is Neural Prolotherapy Right for You?

Neural Prolotherapy  is a safe and effective treatment for chronic nerve  pain resulting from injury or repetitive motion damage. Injured and inflamed nerves cause chronic pain that is not treatable by surgery or pharmaceutical drugs. Attempting to treat nerve damage with pharmaceutical drugs gives little relief at great risk.

Neural Prolotherapy is sometimes referred to as Perineural Injection Treatment (PIT) or Perineural Subcutaneous injections (PSI).

Indications for neural prolotherapy:

  • Unprovoked and unremitting skin and muscle pain and inflammation
  • Tenderness to touch and pressure
  • Burning, cramping, and deep muscle aching

Where does nerve pain come from?

Our nervous system is a  complex network that does more than send signals to the brain. Friction from trauma and repetitive injury strips away nerves’ protective lining. When irritated, nerves secrete toxins into the surrounding tissue causing swelling and pain. This creates an injury on a local level that is hard to treat with oral medications and impossible to address surgically.

How Does Neural Prolotherapy Work?

Perineural Injection Therapy ( PIT)  bathes the nerve and promotes healing and recovery of the myelin sheath as well blocking of nerve receptors that release inflammatory chemicals. It reduces nerve induced inflammation and local tissue injury, making the affected area less sensitive and more resilient to stress and tension.

What is in the Neural Prolotherapy Solution?

Some clinicians use D5W or diluted 5% dextrose in water alone. At OWM Buffalo, a solution of D5W and 3% Mannitol is used for maximal efficacy.

What to expect from a Perineural Injection Treatment session

Treating neurological pain with neural prolotherapy begins with a diagnosis. Dr. Kaplan bases recommendations on your consultation and image studies. OWM Buffalo takes ultrasound images of your nerves at our wellness center. The treatment consists of a series of tiny half-inch injections targeting painful affected nerves with a weak glucose solution. This sugar solution stimulates healing, reversing nerve damage and its symptoms.

Do the effects of Neural Prolotherapy last?

Pain relief is immediate after the first round of injections however you will require multiple treatments to achieve lasting relief. Relief may initially be as brief as a few hours or days. Your symptoms will return less frequently and less intensely after each treatment.

Severe sciatica from spinal stenosis cured by Neural Prolotherapy!

I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and right leg sciatica/ radiculopathy.  I have received a series of steroid epidural spinal injections every four months for the last year and a half. At first they were totally effective.  After a time, they gradually wore off before the next scheduled injection, and finally stopped working all together.  My quality of life was severely affected. Sleeping was unbearable.  I was not able to maintain a comfortable position, waking every few hours in extreme pain.  I was also unable walk without pain.

After four series of Neural Prolotherapy injections for my sciatic pain, the pain was beginning to subside considerably.  After the seventh injection, with the exception of a few flare-ups, I am able to comfortably sleep the night through and walk without pain in my right leg.

I also have primary progressive multiple sclerosis.  I am often times in a wheelchair, which undoubtedly adds to my pain and discomfort.  MS is not a cookie cutter disease. Dr. Kaplan has tried alternative methods with Neural Prolotherapy to help me ease my pain.  He is very attentive and genuinely concerned for my well-being.  For this I am very appreciative.

Believer in Prolotherapy

I’ve had back issues for more than 30 years. The pain has at times contributed to poor sleep. I’ve had such intense pain that I was pretty much nonfunctional. Before meeting Dr. Kaplan, I’d been to many doctors. I was x-rayed and sent out to get an MRI. The physiatrist gave me epidural cortisone injections and said that if that did not work that I would need surgery. The treatment was good for about one week. I was not yet sold on surgery. Additionally, I’ve been going to a chiropractor for many years of back adjustments. One day he told me that my problem was not a chiropractic issue. I gave up my home-improvement contractor’s license and resigned myself to being in pain.

Then I met Dr. Kaplan. After three Prolo Therapy treatments, I’m thrilled to report that I feel substantially better. The chronic pain is gone. My back feels stable for the first time in many years. Additionally, Dr. Kaplan’s bed-side manor, during the injections, was superb. The combination of Dr. Kaplan and Prolo Therapy has been the best thing to happen to my back in the past 35 years. I am a believer in Osteopathic Wellness Center of WNY, Dr. Kaplan and Prolo Therapy.

Neural Prolotherapy has given me back my life!

My condition began approximately 8 years ago when during the night I was awoken with severe contractions of my inner thigh muscle. Instantly I wanted to vomit. I attempted to get to the bathroom when I then passed out. Over the next six years the thigh condition increased from one incident every 3 months to a nightly occurrence. The passing out stopped as my body became used to the severe pain associated with the contractions.

Over the years my family MD sent me for MRIs, blood work, vascular testing- all coming back normal. The only advice I received was to place ice packs on the area when a contraction occurs. The ice packs worked to stop the contractions but did not help to eliminate contractions nightly.

It is impossible in writing to explain how these nightly contractions affected my life, from the simple daily activities that had to be timed and structured not to bring on daytime cramps- to the extreme measures of going to part- time work from full time employment and little things like having a manicure and a pedicure on separate days, not wearing sandals, not being able to walk your dog.

Dr. Kaplan’s neural prolotherapy has giving me back my life, after two months of having prolotherapy. I can now sit pain free, walk 1-2 miles daily and have a manicure-pedicure at the same appointment. I can now sleep through the night with no contractions all because of his neural prolotherapy techniques. I AM SMILING!!!!

Nothing worked…until Dr. Kaplan.

Before I came to Dr Kaplan, I had visited chiropractors, taken pain meds (Gabapentin) , done PT, had acupuncture, tried epidural injections and cold laser therapy. Nothing worked.

For 10 very long months, my pain fluctuated between 6-9 out of 10, and was taking over my mind and body, consuming me. I had severe sciatic burning pain to my knees.

Thanks to Dr Kaplan’s skillful applications of neural prolotherapy, I am being restored to good health. The dextrose injections are definitely helping my intense leg and buttock pain to subside. As I write this, I have had 7 sets of the neural prolotherapy injections and I can feel a decrease in my awful symptoms.

I am so incredibly grateful for Dr Kaplan’s holistic practice. Finding someone who is highly caring and uses a procedure that doesn’t have side effects, and is so highly effective is awesome! I still need more treatments to calm down all the nerve endings, but I am so hopeful I will be 100% better!

I believe Dr. Kaplan is a true pioneer in this new field and treatment.

I was in constant chronic hip, spine and leg pain that could not be resolved with physical therapy, injections, and acupuncture. I couldn’t sleep, lay in bed or turn over to my left side. I also could not sit in a chair, car or walk for long periods of time. Years of medications did not relieve the pain. I have seen many doctors, chiropractors, therapists and the pain would not resolve.

I started with a chronic 6-8 out of 10 level pain at the beginning of my treatment. As of today, after a series of prolotherapy and neural prolotherapy treatments I have almost no pain at all! It is so hard to believe that I don’t think about my hips or legs very much. Feeling minimal pain is so life giving and now I can continue on my path to enhance my level of health and wellness.

I believe Dr. Kaplan is a true pioneer in this new field and treatment. Dr. Kaplan is committed to working with the individual needs of his patients. He is a conscientious, hard worker who can get amazing results.
